Peasant Inn by Cornelis Dusart contains a rowdy scene in, you guessed it, an inn for peasants. I personally think this painting is remarkably realistic, even for genre art of its time. It’s practically realism. It emerged in the 1840s; this is essentially a proto-form of that genre. That is what fascinates me.
So, what have we got here? Apparently, in the left, there’s a fiddler and a singer, singing merry songs. As our eyes move upward, we see a few men drinking large jugs of, from what I can see, beer.
